Johan Ericson completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Umeå University, Sweden, and received his Ph.D. in 1995. After postdoctoral studies with Tom Jessell at Columbia University in New York, Ericson established his own laboratory at the Karolinska Institute in 1999. He currently holds a position as associate professor awarded by The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences. Johan Ericson's research focus primarily on the molecular mechanisms that control the differentiation of neuronal subtypes generated in the ventral spinal cord and brainstem, including motor neurons, serotonergic neurons and dopamine neurons. In 2003 he received the Anders Jahre's Medical Prize for Young Scandinavian Scientists and The Svedberg Award.
