Joseph Lyons, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of molecular biology and genetics at Aarhus University, Denmark. He was awarded his PhD in 2013 by the University of Limerick after training in lipid chemistry, biophysics and membrane protein structural biology in the laboratory of Prof. Caffrey at UL/Trinity College Dublin. A short postdoctoral stay in his PhD laboratory was followed by further postdoctoral studies in the lab of Prof. Nissen at Aarhus University. Here, Dr. Lyons studied primary and secondary transporters, work that culminated in solving the first structures of a yeast lipid flippase by cryo-electron microscopy. His research interests include the use of and development of structural and molecular biology methods to study integral membrane proteins, with a focus on elucidating the mechanism of function and regulation of lipid transporters.
