Bastiaan R. Bloem, MD, PhD

Bastiaan R. Bloem, MD, PhD, FRCPE, FEAN, is a consultant neurologist at the Department of Neurology at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He earned his medical degree with honors and completed both his PhD and neurology training at Leiden University Medical Centre. He later trained as a movement disorders specialist during fellowships at The Parkinson's Institute in Sunnyvale, California, and Queen Square Institute of Neurology in London.

In 2002, Dr. Bloem founded and became medical director of the Radboudumc Centre of Expertise for Parkinson and Movement Disorders, recognized as a center of excellence for more than two decades. In 2004, he co-founded ParkinsonNet, an award-winning international network of specialized providers known for improving care and reducing costs.

Appointed professor of neurology at Radboud University Medical Centre in 2008, Dr. Bloem has authored over 1,200 scientific publications, including more than 950 peer-reviewed papers. He is currently ranked among the top 1 percent of most cited scientists worldwide.

His research focuses on Parkinson’s disease, particularly gait and balance disorders and the advancement of patient-centered care. His work increasingly integrates wearable sensors, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Since 2018, he has also investigated the connection between Parkinson’s and environmental toxins and the use of lifestyle interventions.

Dr. Bloem has received numerous honors, including the Stevin Prize, the highest recognition for a Dutch scientist, and the Joannes Juda Groen Award in recognition of his lifelong interdisciplinary research. He was also appointed a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion, the highest royal distinction in The Netherlands. In 2025, he was awarded the Robert A. Pritzker Prize for Leadership in Parkinson’s Research.
