Dr. Friedrich W. Herberg studied biology at the Ruhr-University Bochum and was awarded his PhD in 1990. He moved to UC San Diego for a postdoctorate on structure-function relationships of protein kinase A. In 1994 he returned to Germany as an independent group leader to the Medical School, Bochum, and habilitated in Physiological Chemistry. In 2002 he joined Kassel University as full professor for biochemistry. He heads the Biochemistry Department with currently about 18 people.

The main research focus is on the molecular basis of fine-tuning kinase activity, employing biochemical, biophysical, cell biological and bioinformatic techniques. They investigate members of the AGC kinase family, PKA, PKG, MAST-Kinases and LRRK2. The group studies conformational switches that control the biomolecule´s function and regulation.

He applies techniques summarized under biomolecular interaction analysis (BIA) such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), ITC or FP and bioluminescent and fluorescent resonance energy transfer (BRET and FRET) for in cellulae investigations.
