Dr. Sanacora is George D. Gross and Esther S. Gross Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University, director of the Yale Depression Research Program, and co-director of the Yale-New Haven Hospital Interventional Psychiatry Service. Dr. Sanacora has used both preclinical and clinical research to expand our understanding of the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders and develop new approaches to diagnose and treat these disorders. He has led numerous NIH-, foundation- and industry-sponsored studies, ranging from preclinical models of mood and neurodegenerative disorders to mechanistic neuroimaging studies using novel magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods to multi-site phase III clinical trials. This research has played a major role in the development of several novel treatments for mood disorders that target neural systems relying on the neurotransmitters glutamine and GABA. Notably, he has led a series of seminal studies examining the efficacy of ketamine and has helped to provide direction for its use in clinical settings.
