Gilberto Fisone, PhD

Dr. Fisone received his training in biology at the University of Pavia (Italy) and his PhD at the University of Stockholm (Sweden). In 1990, Dr. Fisone joined the laboratory of Dr. Paul Greengard at the Rockefeller University (New York), where he later received a position as an assistant professor. Since then, he has been studying the molecular mechanisms underlying neurotransmission in the basal ganglia. In 1995, he took a job as an assistant professor in the Department of Neuroscience of Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, where he began to investigate the involuntary movements, or dyskinesias, produced by long-term treatment with L-DOPA. His work has elucidated several abnormalities implicated in this condition, including changes in cAMP, MAPK and mTOR signaling. Recently, his work has been focusing on the modeling and characterization of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institute.
