Marius K. Lemberg, Dr Sc

Professor at Heidelberg University

Location: Heidelberg Germany

Marius Lemberg, Dr Sc, studied biochemistry and natural sciences at the University of Tübingen in Germany and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). In 2004, he graduated with a doctor of science from ETH. His thesis, which was honored with the ETH Silver Medal, made several seminal contributions to the identification and characterization of presenilin-type intramembrane proteases (enzymes that break down proteins). Thereafter, Dr. Marius Lemberg joined the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge in the UK, where he worked on the mechanism of rhomboid intramembrane proteases (family of enzymes). In 2007, he joined the Center of Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University (ZMBH) in Germany, first as a junior group leader and currently as associate professor (since 2017). The main focus of Dr. Marius Lemberg's work is on protein homeostasis (balance) mechanisms. Work by the Lemberg laboratory and others have identified the mitochondrial (powerhouse of the cell) rhomboid protease (PARL) as crucial component of the PINK1/Parkin pathway.
