Mercedes Prudencio is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Prudencio grew up in Spain where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and then emigrated to the USA and obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences-Neuroscience at the University of Florida. Under the guidance of Dr. David Borchelt, her PhD work focused on animal models and protein aggregation of SOD1-ALS. She then continued towards her postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida, working with Dr. Leonard Petrucelli, and developed skills on transcriptomics and biomarker development. Since establishing her independent research program in 2021, Dr. Prudencio’s has focused on investigating the role of TDP-43, with particular interest in understanding how its contributions differ across neurodegenerative diseases, as well as its interactions with other co-pathologies. Ultimately, the goal of her lab is to find novel targets for therapeutic intervention and/or biomarker development.
