Peter Reinhart was awarded his PhD degree from the Australian National University, in Canberra, Australia, working on IP3-mediated Ca2+ compartment redistributions in hepatocytes. This was followed by postdoctoral studies as a von Humboldt Fellow with Prof. Berndt Hamprecht, at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, studying Ca2+-activated enzymes in neurons and glial cells. In 1989 he joined the laboratories of Drs. Irwin Levitan and Chris Miller at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, to study the second-messenger mediated regulation of ion channels. In 1991 he joined the faculty at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, and became an Associate Professor of Neuroscience 1998. The focus of his studies was the modulation of K+ channels and the role of channelopathies in neurodegenerative diseases. In 2001 he accepted the post of Vice President of Neurodegeneration at Cogent Neuroscience to develop translational neuroscience objectives in the areas of Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Reinhart joined Wyeth Research as Senior Director of Neurodegeneration in 2004. As therapeutic area head of the Neurodegeneration Department within Neuroscience Discovery, he is responsible for mechanistic and drug development strategies comprising the portfolio for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and stroke regeneration, as well as other neurodegenerative disorders including ALS, MS, Huntington’s disease, cognitive impairment, and retinal degeneration. Dr. Reinhart has published over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters and is a regular reviewer for numerous journals as well as grant review bodies.
