Sophie Holmes, PhD

Assistant Professor, Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology at Yale University

Location: New Haven, CT United States

Sophie Holmes is assistant professor of psychiatry and neurology at Yale University. She uses brain imaging to unravel the neural basis of psychiatric symptoms across psychiatric and neurological disorders. Her research is aimed at understanding the mechanisms underlying psychiatric symptoms and then developing interventions that target these mechanisms. Dr. Holmes’s work in depression has shown that a loss of neuronal connections is related to symptoms, and that ketamine is able to restore these connections in some individuals. Recently, she has established a first-of-its kind program that uses multimodal imaging to discover and evaluate new treatments for psychiatric symptoms in neurological disease, with a specific focus on Parkinson’s disease (PD). She is leading the first clinical trial of ketamine for the treatment of depression in PD and using imaging to determine whether changes in the function of neural circuits underpins its therapeutic effects.
