John Forsayeth is a Research Scientist in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 1978 and his PhD in Biochemistry in 1984 at Monash University, Australia. From 1984-1986 Dr. Forsayeth worked as Post-Doctoral Fellow at the UCSF under mentor Dr. Ira Goldfine on the molecular biology of diabetes. He then joined the laboratory of Dr. Zach W. Hall, also at UCSF, where he commenced his training in neurobiology between 1986 and 1991. While in Dr. Hall’s laboratory, he was the recipient of a Muscular Dystrophy Association Fellowship, an NIH-NINDS Training Grant Award, and his first NIH-NINDS independent investigator award (R01). From 1991-1996, he was an NIH-funded investigator in the Department of Anesthesia at UCSF. He also initiated and co-directed an NIH Training Grant in Anesthesia. From 1997 until 2004 he held senior research director positions at a number of biotechnology Companies (Neurex, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Avigen), returning to UCSF in late 2004 to the laboratory of Dr. Krystof Bankiewicz as an independent Principal Investigator.
