Serge Rivest, PhD, is a regular scientist at the CHU de Québec–Université Laval Research Center, full professor at Laval University, and Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology, is a renowned Canadian researcher who has reshaped understanding of the role of the immune system in the brain. His pioneering work revealed that the central nervous system is highly immunologically active, involving innate immune cells within the brain, the periphery, and at the blood-brain barrier. His research aims to harness this system to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. Focusing on the dual nature of inflammation in disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Rivest explores how immune cells can either harm or protect neurons. The program seeks to develop treatments targeting NOD2 receptors and identify novel biomarkers. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the ultimate vision is to validate innate immunity neuroprotective functions and improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases.
