Making Music, Living with Parkinson’s and Raising Awareness in the Hispanic Community

Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) Patient Council member Sebastian Krys has had his hand in some of the biggest music albums we know — from Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Juanes and Elvis Costello — earning him 13 Latin GRAMMY and seven GRAMMY wins in his career.

People en Español has an exclusive story with Sebastian who speaks about his award-winning music producer career to navigating life with Parkinson’s disease (PD). When asked about why he decided to share his story and use his platform to raise Parkinson’s awareness in the Hispanic/Latino community, Sebastian emphasized: “Its a disease that seems like it only affects older white men — but that’s not true. This disease affects everyone, of any color, race or gender.”

MJFF is committed to building inclusive on ramps for diverse populations of patients and families to meaningfully engage in education and research. With support from the Foundation’s Parkinson’s Disease Education Consortium, Sebastian Krys and his brother, MJFF Board member Alex Krys, launched a Spanish-language educational resource — “Parkinson 360: Testimonios Para Pacientes y Familias.”

PPMI is a study that can change everything. You need to know more about the origin and root of things, how the disease starts, how it manifests itself.

While Sebastian’s diagnosis in 2019 at 48 didn’t come as a total surprise to him knowing that he had been living with Gaucher disease and his grandmother had lived with PD, he understands the challenges of recognizing the early signs and symptoms. (Parkinson’s shares a genetic connection to Gaucher disease, a disorder in which fatty substances build up and cause enlarged organs. Learn more about the Parkinson’s Gaucher connection.)

“Looking back, the first symptom was more depression and anxiety. Suddenly I was doing very well, I was working on things that I loved, but I was depressed, anxious; what was happening in my life didn’t fit with and what I was feeling.”

In the exclusive story, Sebastian explains the critical value people of all backgrounds bring to finding better treatments and the answers we seek, including through our landmark study, the Parkinson’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PPMI). “PPMI is a study that can change everything,” he said. “You need to know more about the origin and root of things, how the disease starts, how it manifests itself.”

Today select PPMI recruiting sites offer Spanish-speaking staff to help enroll new participants in the study’s pursuit of better understanding how we diagnose, track, treat and potentially prevent PD.
